Resources for Youth In Foster Care
You are in the right place if you are a youth in foster care interested in starting the driver’s license process (or someone helping a youth!)
All information is from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles website, the agency that oversees the driver’s licensing process. More detailed information about the driver’s licensing process can be found at DMVNOW.com
Here’s what you need to know before you obtain your learner’s permit:
When you turn 15 years old and 6 months, you become eligible to get a learner’s permit. You’ll need to visit a DMV office to apply.
Once you turn 15, start talking to your social worker about your plan to get your learner’s permit. Not only is this the first step toward getting your license but it gives you an official form of government identification (ID). In order to get your learner’s permit, you will need some important documents that your social worker likely has or can get for you. You will need ONE proof of identity AND one proof of legal presence. Your birth certificate will work as proof of both. You’ll also need two proofs of your Virginia address and your social security card. Remember, your social worker can help you gather all of these necessary documents. If your name has changed, you’ll also need a document for that as well.
When you apply for your learner’s permit, you will need to fill out this application with the help of your social worker.
There is a fee for you to obtain your learner’s permit. Click here to get more information about what the fee will be.
You will need to take a Knowledge Exam & a vision screening on the day you obtain your learner’s permit.
If you have a medical issue that may impact your ability to drive, or you may need additional approval from a medical provider, please review this additional information.
If you previously have been found not innocent of any offense by a juvenile and domestic relations court in Virginia or any other state, you must obtain approval to be licensed from that court or a court in the city or county where you live.
